COMTROL 1 Hardware
Maintenance Course
SYSTEM SUPPORT SERVICES announces
the COMTROL 1 HARDWARE MAINTENANCE course for COMTROL 1 high speed multiplexing equipment.
The course is an intensive three day presentation of the practical knowledge you need to
maintain and repair COMTROL 1 multiplexer systems.
The course is custom-tailored for each site, covering only those modules and
configurations which are present in your system. The course is a combination of lecture,
discussion, and, where practical, hands-on lab exercises which reinforce the concepts and
provide valuable information gained through experience with numerous installations.
Extensive use of visual aids is incorporated to further enhance comprehension and which
serve as valuable reference material later.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
- You will learn the function and theory of operation of the COMTROL 1 system hardware.
Emphasis is placed on understanding the signals and circuits which can be used to evaluate
system operation and isolate problems.
- You will learn preventive maintenance and adjustment procedures to keep the system
operating properly. Analyzing the coaxial cable, checking power supplies for age and
proper adjustment, and checking for noise on the backplane are covered.
- You will learn how to diagnose system problems to board level, replace the defective
module and restore the system to full operation.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The course is designed for engineers and technicians who are responsible for
maintenance and repair of computer-based systems which use COMTROL 1 equipment. Students
should have a good background in digital electronics and be familiar with the operation of
common test instruments. Familiarity with basic computer technology and terms is a plus.
TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE
- Functions and theory of operation of the COMTROL 1 master and remote card cages to a
modular (block diagram) level
- Components and operation of loop reconfiguration
- Power supply adjustment and dual-supply balancing
- Preventive maintenance techniques
- Troubleshooting the network to the subassembly level
- Method of communications on the high-speed coaxial cable loop, including modulation,
addressing, and polling schemes
- Signals, timing, and message formats of the communications link between the host
computer and the master card cage
- Signals and timing on the FIM bus backplane
- External system wiring to card readers, door strikes, and alarm inputs
REFERENCE MATERIAL
Each student is provided with a comprehensive technical manual which includes the
original COMTROL 1 manual, block diagrams of each circuit board in the system, and copies
of all other reference material and overhead transparencies used in the course.
