FIELD TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 12

SCOPE

Product(s) Affected: MTI Module for Rusco OEM-500 Series readers

Model or Part Number(s): 30-0091-1

Release Date: April 20, 1995

Subject: Firmware Rev. F and Part Number Change

BACKGROUND

The 30-0091-1 Micro-terminal Interface Functional Interface Module (FIM) was designed for Rusco Model OEM-500K readers with keypads, to allow the entry of a Personal Identification Number (PIN) in addition to reading the badge. When this module is connected to a standard OEM-500 (non-keypad) reader, there is a delay of approximately two seconds after the badge is inserted before the message is processed by the FIM.

This occurs because the FIM is expecting 4 keypad characters in addition to the 4 keycard characters. The OEM-500 reader without the keypad does not send these characters. The FIM waits approximately two seconds, then times out and sends the incomplete message.

SOLUTION

SYSTEM SUPPORT SERVICES has released Revision F of the firmware for the 30-0091-1 Micro-terminal Interface FIM. Also, the part number of the EPROM has been changed. the new part number is 80-2000F, replacing the old 86-2000 number.

The problem has been solved by assigning an unused DIP switch on the board as the "Reader Type" switch. This allows the board to distinguish between readers with keypads, and readers without keypads, and to send the non-keypad messages immediately, thereby eliminating the delay.

RECOMMENDATIONS

If delays are experienced when operating the 30-0091-1 Micro-terminal Interface FIM with non-keypad readers, then installing the new firmware will eliminate the delays.

It should be noted that, because there were not enough unused switches available to set the reader type on a reader-by-reader basis, one switch is used to set the reader type for all 4 readers connected to the FIM. If there is a mix of keypad and non-keypad readers on the same FIM, then the reader type switch must be set for keypad readers, and the non-keypad readers will still experience the delay. A solution to this is to assign the keypad and non-keypad readers to different FIMs, and set the reader type for each appropriately.

There are three alternative approaches to implementing the Revision F firmware update:
